Why Manufacturers Don't Want You to Service Your Transmission Every 30,000 Miles

By Bill DeBoer Jr on Sep 12, 2016 10:27:00 AM

You really like your body, right?  That vessel you move around in every day?  That body of yours is incredibly useful for getting you around and helping you in doing all of the things you like to do.  It’s made up of anywhere from 50-70% water.  That’s why health professionals will advise you to stay hydrated to remain healthy.  The other vessel you use frequently would be your vehicle.  And though your car doesn’t need the water you do, it still needs proper fluids to keep it running smoothly and happily for a long time.  Ah!  Of course!  Oil!  Yes, your car’s motor oil definitely matters, but it has a very important sidekick (Think of it as Robin to your oil’s Batman)-your transmission fluid.  And this other life’s “blood” for your vehicle matters just as much for your favorite car or truck.  How often should you check your transmission fluid?  How often should you change it?  And then the million dollar question-should you believe the schedule set forth for such checks listed in your auto’s manual, including when to service your transmission at all?

Your Car Needs a Bath:  the importance of car washing

By Bill DeBoer Jr on Aug 22, 2016 11:00:00 AM

Just as we humans like to keep ourselves clean, your vehicle would like the same tender care.  While you can’t pop your vehicle into the shower with you daily, and you couldn’t possibly wash your car every day, it’s important to realize that routine maintenance of your vehicle is not limited to the engine, transmission, brakes, and tires.  Keeping your car’s exterior free of excessive dust, road salt, mud, and other debris is essential to not only making your car look more attractive, but actually has some major implications for its mechanical health overall.  Road salt in particular has the ability to erode and rust the undercarriage of your vehicle if not cleaned routinely.  Waxing your vehicle at least twice a year maintains the clear coat finish that your manufacturer put over your paint job.  It's easy to see-the importance of car washing is not insignificant.

How to keep your engine happy:  A new way to think about oil changes

By Bill DeBoer Jr on Jul 8, 2016 5:06:16 PM

It’s a pretty common thing, changing the oil in your vehicle.  If you’re like most people, you simply stop in at your favorite dealership, repair shop, or retail quickie oil-change location and get it done.  In fact, if you’re like some, you’re lucky if you do it at all based on the timeline recommended in your vehicle’s user manual.  Hooray!  You got it done.  Total score for you- right?  Wrong.  Not all motor oil is created equal.  Sadly, not all oil-change locations are created equal.  And while legislation exists that is intended to protect vehicle owners from misleading oil change issues and their detrimental effects, it’s not yet very effective in preventing them.  Unfortunately, you could be patiently sitting in the waiting area of your favorite oil change establishment while they pour liquid death into your vehicle’s engine.  Why?  Because most engines fail due to lack of lubrication.  This means that the quality of your oil change is key to your vehicle’s long healthy life.  That sounds incredibly dire, and it was meant to.  Worried?  You should be.

DEBOER’S AUTO VS. TIRE RACK

By Bill DeBoer Jr on Jun 24, 2016 4:00:00 PM

It’s that time again!  Your baby needs new shoes.  Your vehicle that is, not your child.   Much like auto inspections, it’s highly doubtful anyone enjoys this necessary evil.  The buying process for new tires can be untimely, pricey, and confusing.  There are so many options, and many of us don’t know up from down in this situation.  Traditionally, you’d go to an auto garage and they would sell and install your tires for you.  DeBoer’s Auto would fit into this category, though as auto specialists they also do so much more.  However in today’s tech-driven world, you now have the option to buy your tires direct from an internet supplier such as Tire Rack, and have them installed once you receive them.  Which option is the better one?  Well, that answer lies in what your needs are.
