As temperatures drop, hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) owners may notice changes in their car’s performance and efficiency. Colder weather can impact everything from battery life to fuel economy, making it important to know how to adapt. At DeBoer’s Auto, our ASE- and EV-certified technicians are here to help you understand what’s happening under the hood and provide guidance to keep your vehicle running smoothly all winter long.Battery Efficiency and Range

Hybrid and EV batteries, often lithium-ion, operate less efficiently in low temperatures. Cold weather slows down the chemical reactions within the battery, which can reduce the electric range in hybrids—especially plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)—and increase reliance on the gasoline engine. Parking your vehicle in a garage or using pre-conditioning (warming it up while still plugged in) can help preserve range.

Fuel Efficiency
In colder conditions, the internal combustion engine (ICE) in hybrids runs more often to provide cabin heat and maintain optimal battery temperatures, which can reduce fuel efficiency. To help, try combining trips to give the vehicle time to warm up, improving both fuel and energy use.

Regenerative Braking Performance
Cold weather can reduce regenerative braking efficiency, as cooler batteries don’t absorb energy as effectively. To maximize regenerative braking, plan your stops early and brake gently, allowing the system to operate as efficiently as possible.

Tire Pressure and Traction
Cold weather can cause tire pressure to drop, which affects fuel economy and tire traction. Winter tires, though essential for safety in icy conditions, have higher rolling resistance and can also slightly reduce fuel economy.
