By now you’ve heard of electric vehicles and how they are beneficial to the environment. If you’re considering buying one for any reason, your research might have led you to the reality that there are a few different types to choose from. There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to electric vehicles. We’ve provided you with a basic understanding of the three main types of electric vehicles to help you get started.
Fully Electric Vehicles
The first type is a fully electric vehicle. This type is what most people think of when it comes to electric vehicles. Tesla vehicles are a good example since those are the type the company produces. There are no other operating features with fully electric vehicles and the only source of power comes from electricity. It’s largely the most popular type of electric vehicle, but this could change in the coming years as consumers will have other options to choose from.
Plug-In Hybrid
The plug-in hybrid vehicle is one you can plug in to charge the battery and the car runs solely on the battery until the battery is depleted. At that point, the gasoline motor kicks in and the car runs on the gas until the battery is charged. The major benefit of the plug-in hybrid is you won’t have to worry about being stranded if your battery goes out since you can simply fill the vehicle up with gasoline and continue driving.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles
Fuel cell electric vehicles are not nearly as prominent as the other two types. It’s powered by hydrogen and the technology has come a long way in recent years. Production and sales of fuel cell electric vehicles have begun in California, so we could start seeing more of them across the country in the near future. The unique thing about this type of electric vehicle is instead of plugging it in to charge, you fill it up with hydrogen gas to power the electric motor.
