When most people think about securing their vehicles, they refer to locking their doors, rolling up their windows, and taking out their valuable belongings. In some cases, people even go a step further and park their vehicles inside a locked garage. These are all great tips to protect your vehicle every day and night. However, there’s another component vehicle thieves are targeting today and you might not even know it has been stolen until you turn your vehicle on.

Police: Suspects sought in catalytic converter theft caught on video

Why Catalytic Converters Are Valuable

The price of metals is increasing, and the precious metals inside of catalytic converters make those components targets for thieves. They know how to take the catalytic converter out of your vehicle and sell the metals for a profit. Unfortunately, simply locking your doors won’t prevent this type of theft from happening, but there are a few things you can do to protect your vehicle.

Tips For Protecting Your Vehicle

Protect your car from catalytic converter theft. The best thing you can do to protect your vehicle from theft of the catalytic converter is to park the vehicle in the garage. If your garage is too cluttered or if you don’t have an enclosed garage, then you’ll want to make sure you park in a well-lit area. The catalytic converter takes a few minutes to remove, and thieves won’t want to be seen while they are doing it. Theft devices are also available to put underneath your vehicle to make it very difficult for them to access and steal the catalytic converter.

How Will You Know If Your Catalytic Converter Has Been Stolen?

A lot of people ask how they will know if their catalytic converter has been stolen since it won’t be visible without crawling under the vehicle. The answer is you will know immediately when you turn your vehicle on because it will make a tremendously loud noise. The exhaust will be running straight out of the engine catalytic converterand create a very loud noise as a result to the point where the only thing you can do is turn it off.

Always be on the lookout for thieves around your vehicles as you never know what their intentions are.
