Driving Without a Jr. High Diploma
Bill DeBoer has always been enterprising. At the early age of 12 years old, while other kids were still tucked warmly into their beds, Bill was out before dawn throwing newspapers for his paper route. Since he was up that early anyway, his dad allowed him to back the car out of the garage into the driveway in order to warm it up.
The daily ritual saved his dad time in the mornings and it gave Bill the chance to get behind the wheel and actually drive, even if it was only a few feet. Everything was going along smoothly until Bill started backing the car out a little further each day, leading to eventual car trouble.
Like an addictive drug, Bill couldn’t stop his need for the thrill of taking the car further. It was only a matter of time until he had backed completely out into the street. That gave him enough room to actually drive forward! Still not satisfied, one day he decided to drive all the way around the block. What could it hurt? And what a rush! This went on for a while without incident.
One morning, he came flying up the street, to find his dad running into the lawn in his underwear, pointing at Bill to park the car back in the driveway. That incident put an end to Bill’s beloved morning drives. After that, all he could do was count the days until he was 16 when he could get his license – 4 long years!
