As you drive past DeBoer’s Auto this April, you might notice something a little different on our lawn. It’s not a new vehicle or an outdoor display—but a sea of bright blue pinwheels gently spinning in the breeze. These aren’t just cheerful signs of spring; they’re symbols of something much deeper: hope, resilience, and the right of every child to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to shine a light on an issue that often remains in the shadows. Across the country, communities are coming together to show their support for children and families by participating in the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign. Here in Sussex County, that effort is led by Ginnie’s House, our local Children’s Advocacy Center, and we are proud to stand with them.

Ginnie’s House provides a safe, compassionate place for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. They coordinate with law enforcement, medical professionals, and mental health counselors to ensure that every child who walks through their doors is treated with dignity and care. Their goal is simple but profound: to give children back their voice and to begin the healing process in the most supportive way possible.

The pinwheel has become the national symbol for child abuse prevention because it represents the carefree, joyful childhood all children deserve. It reminds us of what we’re working to protect. At DeBoer’s Auto, we believe that supporting our community means more than just fixing cars—it means standing up for the most vulnerable among us. That’s why we’ve joined businesses and individuals across the county in displaying pinwheels and signs to help raise awareness for this important cause.

We encourage everyone who sees these pinwheels to pause for a moment and reflect on their meaning. Ask yourself how you can be part of the solution. Whether it's learning the signs of abuse, supporting local organizations like Ginnie’s House, or simply starting a conversation, every small action adds up.

Together, we can create a community where children are safe, supported, and free to be exactly what they’re meant to be—kids. This month, and every month, let’s commit to building that future, one pinwheel at a time.
