When it comes to your vehicle’s headlights, there are a few problems that could occur that impact the brightness of the bulb. And when the bulb brightness isn’t what it should be, your visibility could be lower and lead to a dangerous driving situation. The good news is most of the time the problem with low visibility due to bulb brightness can be fixed easily. Sometimes you might even be able to fix the problem at home by yourself. We’ve discussed some of the common problems you might experience with your headlights and how they can be solved.

Outer Film On The Lens

One of the most common problems with headlights is the lens will slowly develop an outer film on it. When manufacturers finish making a vehicle, they spray a clear coat over the entire vehicle. Over time, this clear coat can become cloudy and block the brightness of your headlights as a result.

The good news is this common problem can be taken care of with a simple kit or a DIY method you can find on YouTube. Some people find success using toothpaste, baking soda, or other household products. Or if you don’t want to try those methods, you can find professional kits at auto part stores. The main thing to remember is once you get the film removed, you have to seal the lens so it won’t come back any time soon.

Degraded Or Damaged Seals

Keep your headlights in excellent condition to improve visibility. All headlight beams are sealed to keep moisture out. However, over time these seals can degrade due to age or they could get damaged by a rock that hits them and punctures them. Regardless of how the seal gets damaged, water could enter and it’s virtually impossible to get it out when that happens. You might see condensation inside the lens and sometimes the water droplets will fall on the hot bulbs and blow them out. So if you’re constantly replacing headlight bulbs because of this, then the best thing to do is have your whole headlight assembly replaced.

Bulb Brightness

The headlights on vehicles have progressed significantly over the years. New vehicles today use LED bulbs and are brighter than they’ve ever been. If you’re driving an older vehicle that doesn’t use LED bulbs, after-market kits are available you can use to upgrade your lighting and improve your visibility while driving.
