Best Practices for Safe Driving

Spring road Car Care Awareness DeBoer's Auto

April is Car Care Awareness Month, and as the flowers bloom and the hum of traffic grows with the promise of spring, it’s the perfect time to ensure your vehicle is in top condition. At DeBoer’s Auto in Hamburg, NJ, we understand that safety is paramount, which is why we’re dedicated to helping you maintain your vehicle for the road ahead. Watching your speed: Driving fast can be a thrill but it is also dangerous. Monitoring your speed is not just about avoiding tickets; it’s about keeping you and others safe. High speeds reduce the driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extend the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and increase the distance a vehicle travels as the driver reacts to a dangerous situation.

Safe Following Distance: Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead. A good rule of thumb is the “three-second rule” which allows for a safe following distance at any speed. This distance should be increased if you’re driving in adverse weather conditions.

Adjust Seat Position and Mirrors: Before you start the engine, adjust your seat position and mirrors for proper vision. Your rearview and side mirrors should give you a clear view of the road and other vehicles, without having to strain your neck.

Never Use Your Phone While Driving: Distracted driving is a leading cause of road accidents. Using your phone while driving can wait; nothing is as important as your life and the lives of others on the road.

Vehicle Safety Inspection: Your vehicle itself has several safety features that should be regularly inspected:
Tires: Check for proper inflation, tread depth, and signs of wear. Remember, your tires are the only point of contact with the road.
Brakes: Listen for any unusual noises and pay attention to the responsiveness of your brakes.
Suspension: A well-maintained suspension system ensures a smoother ride and better vehicle handling.
Rust: Rust can compromise the structural integrity of your vehicle. Inspect your vehicle for any signs of rust and address them promptly.
