A New Way to Think About Car Buying

Written by Bill DeBoer | Oct 2, 2015 8:00:00 AM

Until recently, the process of car shopping was not for the faint of heart. Shifty salesmen, hard-sell tactics and the pervasive uncertainty the price you negotiated wasn’t the best price available all culminate to create a stressful experience. When you buy most other goods, you aren’t expected to haggle to get the best price. Now, more consumers are asking themselves, is haggling the best way to buy a car? Fortunately, many car dealers are taking notice and changing the way they do business.

The Rise of Negotiation-free Dealerships

Imagine walking onto a car lot with the peace of mind of knowing the sticker prices displayed were non-negotiable. That realization would alleviate much of the stress of buying a car and would make the process faster. Thanks to negotiation-free dealerships and independent car dealers, you don’t have to imagine this new and improved way of car shopping. You can experience it for yourself. It’s certainly a new way to think about car buying, but it’s catching on.

Hate to Haggle? Thank the Internet

The Internet is one of the driving factors behind no-haggle car shopping. By the late 1990s, online shopping was pervasive and many car dealers had websites. Dealerships developed Internet sales departments to cater to online shoppers. Because online shoppers can quickly and easily research prices from multiple car dealers, Internet salespeople realized it was in their best interest to quote their most competitive prices up front. Offering the lowest possible price increased the odds of making a sale.

Fixed Pricing Is Here to Stay

While fixed-pricing isn’t the standard at all car dealers, it’s gaining momentum. Dealerships like Lexus, Mini and Tesla are leading the charge, as are online companies that quote a fixed price, let customers complete their purchase online, deliver the car to the customer and even allow the customer to return the car if they decide they don’t want it.

If you prefer to actually touch and test drive the merchandise before buying, though, don’t overlook the many benefits of buying a car from an independent car dealer. Because independent dealers have no quotas to meet and are not subject to restrictions from the corporate office, they’re far more flexible. Not only will you be able to avoid the dreaded haggling scenario, you’ll also be able to complete your transaction more quickly.

What to Know Before You Car Shop

If you’re preparing to buy a new or used vehiclecar dealerships in sussex county nj, do your homework before you start shopping. Research the going rate for the vehicle you’re interested in and determine the ideal price you want to pay before you begin your search. If you have a trade-in, find out in advance what its fair market value is. Finally, if you’ve done your research and know the price you want to pay, stand your ground. If a car dealer’s price is higher than the going rate, look elsewhere.
