A serpentine belt is a single, continuous belt used to keep numerous external components in a car engine. Some things to look for to know if your belt is failing or going bad are:

Over time, a serpentine belt fails from heat and friction it endures everyday. A failing belt causes issues that affect some of the big, important pieces of a car, such as: the alternator, water pump, and power steering.
The serpentine belt has a definitive life like most car parts. It is recommend that car owners have their belt inspected at 60,000 miles and replaced at 90,000 miles. When a serpentine belt is replaced, it is also suggested to replace the tensioner and idler pulleys.
The belt tensioner spring absorbs the shock of the car starting and any other harsh motions that it experiences everyday. Once the spring goes bad, the belt pops off due to lack of tension. The bearing the pulley will follow, causing the serpentine belt to stop, burn, and fall off the car.
These kind of belt-off situations will require a tow, because the car will not be able to run without it as it helps control so many major components of the engine.
