Fall Road Trips: Safety Tips Before You Go

There’s nothing quite like fall in our corner of the world. The air turns crisp, the pace of life feels a little slower, and the trees put on a show like no other. As kids settle back into school and the days grow shorter, many of us can’t resist hopping in the car for a drive through the countryside to soak in the beautiful changing colors.
But before you set out for that picture-perfect leaf-peeping trip, it’s worth taking a few steps to make sure your vehicle is as ready for the season as you are. A relaxing autumn drive should stay just that—relaxing. A little preparation goes a long way.

Start with the Basics
Tires are the foundation of every safe journey. As the roads get slicker with falling leaves or a sudden September rainstorm, good tread and proper tire pressure make all the difference. Brakes are equally important—because while you may be focused on the scenery, the driver in front of you might hit their brakes suddenly while admiring the same view. Knowing your brakes can respond quickly gives you peace of mind.

Fluids are another small detail that have a big impact. From coolant to windshield washer fluid, each plays a role in keeping your vehicle running smoothly and safely. And don’t overlook your wipers—fall storms can move in fast, and you’ll want a clear view of the road as the colors blur past your windows.

And then there are your lights. With the sun setting earlier each day, headlights, brake lights, and turn signals become your way of communicating with other drivers. Making sure they’re all functioning properly keeps you visible and safe.

Be Road Aware
Beyond your vehicle itself, autumn brings its own driving challenges. Wet leaves on the pavement can be just as slick as ice, reducing traction and making stopping distances longer. Stay alert and drive cautiously, especially on shaded or winding roads.

And let’s not forget the wildlife. As animals get ready for winter, they’re on the move—sometimes right across the road. Deer, in particular, are more active at dawn and dusk. Keeping an eye on the edges of the roadway can save you from a dangerous encounter.

Traffic is another thing to keep in mind. You’re not the only one drawn to the bright reds, oranges, and yellows. Scenic routes can get crowded, and other drivers may brake suddenly to catch a glimpse or pull off for a photo. Staying patient and keeping your distance is the best way to ensure your trip stays enjoyable.
